Hurricane Day Updo

People up North have Snow Days but we have Hurricane Days in Florida. Today was the first time that I recall us having a Tropical Storm Day where all of the schools and non-emergency government offices were closed. On one hand I can understand the concern... not because of the T.S., but because of the threat of tornadoes. But on the other hand I think it's a bit of overkill. I mean I've lived in Florida my entire life and prior to 2004 can only remember one hurricane coming through Central Florida. It was back in the day and it must have been sometime before I started kindergarten because we were still living in Cocoa, which is on the coast.

Anyhoo... since I was bored and couldn't take care of the one thing that I had on my schedule today since both the community college and the agency that helps unemployed persons find jobs/training were closed, I began looking at Fotki albums. As always,
I started coveting some of the loose natural hairstyles that I saw. So I decided to do an updo. I think it came out pretty well but it would look a lot better on retightened hair (I've been to lazy to retighten).

*You can click on the pictures to see larger images*

I cornrowed my hair up, wrapped my Tomoka's Twist to hold it in a pony, and then curled the ends with small Soft Spike curlers. When I first envisioned it, I wanted Bantu knots in the top but apparently I'm missing some secret because my sample Bantu knots looked a mess lol. I can't believe how thick my ponytails are going to be... I keep thinking about how much perms took all the volume away from my hair and then I would try to get it back by putting weave in it.... and the worst part is that I usually got weaves with a small curl pattern. I could have been wearing my natural, loose hair and getting the same effect! Do you know what I could do with all the money I've wasted over the years?

Here's a texture shot. I was trying to capture the back of my head but failed, this is one of the few drawbacks of living alone that I can think of. I think I did a pretty good job considering that my braiding skills aren't the best.

You did an awesome job!!! The updo is gorgeous and I think it looks perfect without a retightening.

It still amazes me how much volume perms and chemicals take away from our hair. I thought I had extremely thin hair when I went natural and I was pleasantly surprised when my locks filled out.

I love your updo. It looks just as good without a retightening.

Having sisterlocks you can have the same styles as loose hair just look at your locks as loose hair and you can achieve any style you want.

Can you share some of the fotki albums you look at for styles?

check out my daughters album fotki/prettydimples...she is a loose natural.

Thanks ladies! I was happy with how it turned out and will be wearing this style again.

@rm, I'll check your daughter's album out because I'm not really big on having hair in my face during the summer so I need to practice some updos for when my hair gets longer. As for albums that I visit... I never got into Myspace but Fotki sucked me in. That site is dangerous, it's like I get sucked into an abyss and I look up and realize that I've been on the site for waaay too long lol. I usually go to albums that get a lot of visitors, look at their pics, and then start clicking on the people who leave comments, and it just goes on and on *blush*

A couple that I visit often are DivaDevine and eclark6. I just found afrodite12. divinerae and lionness both have locks, but they wear some cute styles. HTH!

Hi JA, I'm a DIYer but I know that meikmeika has been going to Kaydra who is here in the Orlando area with good results. She's listed on the registry... her number is 407-491-8793.

I love the updo it looks lovely!

I must admit I don't think it was necessary for them to overreacct but I did enjoy my day off, lol.

@Brown Buttahfly... Girl, the kids here had two days off for no reason! In my county it's been like any other rainy behind summer... sporadic rain, no flooding, and no lightning. So I would have been kind of ticked off if I was a parent who had to call in to work or scramble to make arrangements for daycare. Anyhoo, thanks for the compliment :)

Your do looks great!!! I guess you'll come up with another great style when the next tropical storm and tornado threat rolls through.

Having a perm in Florida humidity must have been torture on your permed hair. How'd you manage that?

S0uthernGirl said...

Hi Nicky, thanks for stopping by :)

You know, I rarely dealt with my permed hair. I did the perm then weave cycle over and over again and rarely wore my hair loose so the humidity wasn't really a problem for me.

So very pretty! I think you should wear your hair up more. How gorgeous is your face hidden behind those wonderfully thick tresses? I also like how you used the Tomoka Twists uniquely. Cute! I'm a fan.

Hey Girl, finally getting caught up on my blogging. Your updo looks very cute and I agree, nice styling with the TT.

I think after Katrina a couple years ago, everyone is super proactive with these storms as no one wants to be caught not being proactive enough. I just went through craziness evacuating for Gustav and when I got home and saw that there was no damage, I realize I could have stayed home but better to be safe than sorry.

Hi Ladies, thanks for the wonderful compliments!

@NaturallySophia, I've always been guilty of hiding behind my hair and it's gotten worse since I gained weight. But I'm working on that (both things lol).

Very cute! I'm with MM, I was actually thinking that I liked the way it looked at the roots with the thickness from your new growth - all soft and curly.

Thanks Blackrussian!
