I've been getting a little bored with my hair because it's in an in between stage, not short and not long. So... I decided I would get highlights, which turned into a complete debacle.
I wanted one inch chunks of auburn and honey blond. This was my inspiration pic:
I wanted to reduce the chances of me having to color more than once and decided to have them professionally done. So, I went to Aveda and took the picture for extra measure. After explaining to the stylist exactly what I wanted and that I wanted the color focused around my face, I decided to let her color it. The first time around, the color didn't take. I wasn't happy but I do know that the only thing that works on my hair is permanent color so I agreed to come back for a correction. Tell me why my hair looked like this when she was finished?

I was totally crushed because A) I hated the colors and B) it wasn't at all like the pic I showed (and explained to her). She offered to try to correct it (by processing my hair for a third time) but I was beyond aggravated at that point. Plus, I could see how much lock repair I was going to have to do (it ended up taking forever) so I just left. I tried to resist and hold off on recoloring, but needless to say looking at the tragedy that was on my head daily wore me down so I went back to black by using an at home kit by Feria.
This all happened a couple weeks ago. So far, none of my hair has fallen out lol. My locks are just a little dry, so I've been drinking lots of water and deep conditioning them. I definitely suffered a set back with the progress of the locks in my crown... I'll post updated pics this week.
If you decide to color definitely try to get a reference from someone (I don't know anyone who gets there hair colored so I had to take a chance).

Sorry to hear about your coloring mishap. As a cosmetologist, allow me to suggest that the next time you want color, you find a picture of locks that are colored the way that you want them. To show a colorist, particularly one that is not experienced in coloring locks, a picture of straight hair that has been colored in an attempt to get the same effects on hair that is natural is like comparing apples to oranges. You would not, nor could you get that look. Whoever colored your hair should have advised you of this prior to accepting the job.
I imagine now that your locks have really swollen up due to the cuticle lifting to allow the color to deposit. Make sure you use a good conditioner to prevent internal cortical layer damage and prevent breakage that may take some time to show its head. Best of luck!
PS. If you haven't gone back to black yet, allow me to suggest that you do not use more than 5 volume of developer on your hair. Your hair shaft is already opened and it doesn't take a lot of lift to color over your light color.
Thanks for stopping by Nihuru. I should clarify that the inspiration pic was chosen for the colors and size of the highlights. I told her that I did not want a streaked look... I think that it would have been closer to the look I was going for if she had strategically highlighted 2 or 3 adjacent locks as opposed to doing whole rows. I may try to DIY myself in the future, but it won't be any time soon :)
Anywho, I've been using some deep conditioning treatments that I got at Sally's and L'Oreal Color Vive. Do you have any specific brands that you recommend?
Oh, it looks like she just picked up the hair in the top of your head and just colored...anyway, we learn and live with color...it's all a game. I always mix two different colors, except when I'm going back natural, and never mix the same two colors exactly the same because I don't measure an ounce of this one and 1/2 ounce of another one...that's what makes color fun. It can always be corrected.
Loreal has really nice color and great selections. I'm not sure about conditioners that sally's sell. Do they still sell Motions products? I never cared for the line of relaxers etc but their conditioner was the shiat..back in the day...if they haven't change the formulations. I use Silk2 products. Most salons will retail it to you. Their products are high moisture and I have been using them since day one on my locks. My girlfriend used to tell me that I was crazy to condition in the early stages of my SL but like I told her, my style has changed not my hair's needs and my hair needs moisture in order for both of us to be happy LOL.
I also use natural products like Shea Nut Oil (really lite) and Aloe Vera Butter (a little heavier and melts on contact with your skin)in my hair. Check out www.africaimports.com for more natural hair and skin products. Their prices are very reasonable. I posted information on my blog about some of the products that I use from there. They are located in New Jersey and if I'm not mistaken you can go there and shop. I have a wholesale account with them so I may be mistaken about retail shopping.
I enlarged your pixs after your color and it actually didn't look bad. I could see the 2 different colors...very unique.
I do like your color, sorry you weren't a raving fan of it.
Color does texturize hair slightly. For future hair color endeavors, I would suggest a natural or henna dye which won't give you the color from your inspiration pic. It will, however, subtely lighten it without damaging the hair.
I say try an Aveda moisturizing treatment or olive oil for 15 minutes with a shower cap after a shampoo.
@Nihuru, they do have Motions. It's funny because I always look at their products but have never tried them, even as a permie. Never heard of the Silk2 but I'll Google them.
@Naturally Sophia, My hair loves olive oil (I add it to my spritz). I'll try using it under a shower cap like you recommended.
My mom said I was overreacting to the color. But for some reason, I was convinced that it had an orange tint to it *shrugs*. Maybe I'm too much of a control freak lol. I'm sure I'll try color again in the future... either by trying highlights again or by dying all of my locks auburn. It's all Nihuru and Locmocha's faults for posting pics of their beautifully colored locks :)
I like the highlights!! I also think you should wait before coloring. As with all dye jobs I've seen the color doesn't stay as bright(don't know if that's the right word to use) as time progresses.
I have to agree with Naturally Sophia and Meikemeika I like the new color as well. Sorry I don't have any tips on the hair, but I hope you will be happy again soon. Take Care
Do whats cute to you and what you can live with especially at work . Sorry to read about your frustration but you can always color it again as nihuru stated. However I don't know much about coloring and I was wondering how soon can you color again without any serious damage. The look you wanted was very nice but thats a wig on Bree. Remember her from america's top model.
When I've seen locks that are 'streaked' and they come out very similar to yours. I think looks pretty. I am so afraid to try color. It is going to be a long time before I can anyways because my hair unravels if I look at it too hard.
Umm... so y'all just basically confirmed that I have issues lol.
@Penny, I didn't even realize that was Bree, she looks so different from when she had long, big hair on ANTM. I should have realized it because Danielle and YaYa were in the hairstyle gallery on Essence too.
Sorry Southern,
I didn't mean to set you up for the woo woo with my hair color. If it makes you feel any better, I have darkened mine back. The textures (fuzzies) with the lighter color was just more then I could bear. I like it more now...not sure for how long but for now, I'm leaving it darker, with some highlights.
I always get really pale in the winter so I will probably go lighter than because I look really washed out with dark hair in the winter.
Before I got locks I colored all of the time...almost weekly...it's a little different with locks because if I damage these babies I would be sick financially....there is a lot of money tied up in Sisterlocks so I am a little more cautious.
Everybody likes somebody else's something better than their own. I love my BF's hair and like mine and she loves my hair and is "so so" about her own.
I think it is just our nature to want what we can't or shouldn't have.LOL
I like the way your hair looked, However I myself am fearful of experimenting with color, I'm going to hit up nihuru for suggestions when I do...which might be some years from now...lol. Hope everything worked out for the better !
@happily, let me know when you get ready...I'll do what I can; more than willing to help a sista out!
I actually like your highlights and i'm sure it will grow on you once you feel more comfortable with them. I attempted to do something similar on myself years ago and it came out great but a little to orange for my liking. I think in about a year or so I would like to have some reddish-brown streaks, but just a few in the front and I will most likely do it myself. I've had way to many hair-dresser nightmares so I can't go near a shop anymore.
Please be sure to moisturize them for the next few weeks and be careful with styling since they might still be kind of weak from all the coloring.
Thanks Southern for dropping by and checking out my blog.
I don't know much about coloring but I would suggest finding a photo / pic in a mag of a person with colored locs. Before I colored my hair, I would seek out folk with locs - especially those with colored locs. And for the record, they don't look bad!
